March 3, Thurs., bicycling to Echo Bay

It was sunny and calm (which means 'windless' here!) so we went for a bicycle ride to Echo Bay, which is 15 miles away.
Fifteen hilly miles!

This is a sign you don't see every day!
Desert Tortoises are on the endangered list.
Good thing this is a lightly traveled road.

Scenery along the Echo Bay road. The bank is made up of dirt and gravel, and it's severely undercut, so we stayed back from the edge. It's a long way down!

Rest and water break!

We weren't joking about how windy it gets here!
This was on the restaurant door.
The restaurant is closed for the season.
It's hard to remember it's winter. Summer in Montana
isn't much warmer than this!
At full pool, when the lake is filled as deep as Hoover Dam would allow it, the water would be almost to where we're standing. In the distance, to the right, you can see the white high-water marks. The lake is about 80' below full pool. Way at the bottom, if you enlarge this picture, you can see pick-up trucks parked, and get an idea how far down there it is.
This is the boat launch ramp!

The marina and boat slips are on floating platforms since the water levels fluctuate.
Right now the water is at 1,096', and the water temperature is 54, according to
the park information.

A fire boat parked along the dock.
Our firefighter son would probably love to play with it.
I keep telling Steven we need little water cannons mounted on the
fronts of our kayaks! What a water fight we could have!

A pair of ducks near the marina

Carp in one of the boat slips near the marina store.
Can you spot 'waldo' (the lone duck)!
I guess these guys are used to being fed!
We bought some munchies in the marina store and sat out
on the pier to eat them.
On the way back we decided to explore the crack of a canyon you see in the middle
back there.

Steven

Me, climbing up the canyon.

Steven climbing up.
After the heat of being out on the highway, pedaling a bicycle,
the cool of the canyon was wonderful.

Finally we came to the end, where we might have been able to climb up, but not get down.

This is the upper part of the last picture.

On the way home we stopped by a hot spring pool. That's where these minnows are.

Now that I already took pictures of the minnows, here's Steven resting
by the water's edge.

Looking downstream from the pool, you can see Lake Mead in the distance.

The warm water flows out under the rock in the middle at the back of the pool, where the bushes stop. The water is just cooler than bathtub water.
Unfortunately, the signs warm of an aomeba in the water that can be deadly if it
enters your body, such as through your nose.
I have seen people wading here in the past, though.
Locally, it's a popular picnic area.
When we got home we were too hot to cook a meal, so we made "fruit salad".
Mine.
Pineapple, coconut shreds, banana slices, and mini-marshmallows.

Steven's.
Same as mine, plus chocolate muffin and leftover peach slices!
